Sources: the README of proskillpacks/skills, our own repo, for the prompt route. For skills inside ChatGPT, OpenAI's Build skills page, read on 4 October 2026.
The prompt route needs nothing installed. OpenAI's docs also say standalone skills are available in the ChatGPT desktop app (open Skills in the sidebar) and that skills bundled in plugins work in ChatGPT on the web, desktop and mobile. We have not tested our skills in the ChatGPT desktop app, so on web and phone use the prompt.
Steps
- Open the skill's folder on GitHub, for example
skills/ecommerce/shopify-policy-checker. - Open
prompt.mdand copy all of it. - Start a new chat in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or any other chatbot, and paste it in.
- Where the prompt says to add your own material, paste it: the page text, the reviews, the invoice details or the diff.
- Send it, read the answer, and check it against your own facts before using it.
What is different from an installed skill
The repo README says the prompt versions have no scripts and no web access. A skill you install can fetch a page or run a helper script. In a chatbot you paste in the text it would have fetched, and if a skill relies on a script for exact figures, the chatbot does the arithmetic itself, so check the working.
Tips
- Use your assistant's strongest model. In our own tests, smaller models were more likely to add facts that were not in the source text.
- Start a new chat for each job so earlier messages do not leak in.
- Keep the answer only if every fact in it traces back to what you pasted.
Limits
- Chatbots can ignore parts of a long prompt. If the answer skips a step, say which step and ask for it again.
- Do not paste anything private into a tool you are not allowed to use it with.
