Install your skill

Install it once. Then ask for the job in plain words.

What you bought is a skill: a reusable set of instructions, rules and checks that your assistant keeps and uses every time. You install it once. After that you just ask for the job in plain words. Below is the install route for each assistant, with the maker's own page so you can see the steps are real. Menus change, so check the page if a name looks different.

Install it once, in your assistant

Claude (claude.ai and the apps)

  1. Open Settings > Capabilities and make sure Code execution and file creation is on.
  2. Go to Customize > Skills, click +, then Create skill, then Upload a skill.
  3. Upload the zip from the claude-ai folder in your download, as it is (do not unzip it). Switch the skill on, then ask for the job.

Anthropic: Use skills in Claude · Claude Projects, if you prefer one

Claude Code

  1. Unzip your download. Copy the skill folder (the one with SKILL.md inside) into ~/.claude/skills/, or into .claude/skills/ inside one project.
  2. Start Claude Code and ask for the job in plain words. Claude loads the skill when it fits.

Anthropic: Extend Claude with skills

ChatGPT

  1. Make a Project (the Projects page below shows where). Put a short instruction in the Project, such as: use the skill file in this Project's sources whenever I ask for this job.
  2. Add the skill's SKILL.md file from your download as a source in the Project.
  3. Start each job as a new chat inside the Project and give it your material.

OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT. OpenAI's docs also describe skills in the ChatGPT desktop app and in Codex; they do not describe uploading a skill file in the ChatGPT web app, so a Project is the route we can stand behind.

Codex

  1. Unzip your download. Copy the skill folder into ~/.agents/skills/ (every project) or .agents/skills/ in a repository.
  2. Codex picks up new skills by itself. If it does not show, restart Codex, then ask for the job.

OpenAI: Build skills

Gemini

  1. On gemini.google.com open the sidebar, click Gems, then New Gem.
  2. Name it after the job. Paste the contents of the skill's SKILL.md into the instructions. You can also add the other files from the skill folder under Knowledge, Add files.
  3. Save, then open the Gem whenever you need the job done.

Google: Use Gems in Gemini Apps

Grok

  1. In Grok Build, copy the skill folder into ~/.grok/skills/ (every project) or ./.grok/skills/ (one project).
  2. Ask for the job. Grok finds skills in those folders.

xAI: Skills, Plugins and Marketplaces. We found no xAI page on installing a skill in the Grok chat app, so there, use the paste-in version below.

No skills feature on your plan?

Paste it once, instead. Each download also has a paste-in version of the skill: open the prompts folder and the text file inside. Put it in a Project (ChatGPT or Claude) or a Gem (Gemini) once, so you do not paste it every time. Or paste it as the first message of a chat. This works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft publishes no page we could find on saving instructions in the free Copilot app, so there, paste it into a new chat (Microsoft: Copilot help). How we test says which assistants we ran each product on.

Either way, add your own details where the text says to (the review, the call notes, the CV) and read the answer before you use it.

Questions

Do I need a paid plan?

Anthropic's help says skills and Projects are available on Claude's free plan. The other assistants' skills and saving features can depend on your plan: read the linked page for your account. Pasting into a chat needs only the free version.

Is my data uploaded to you?

No. The zip is plain files that you open on your own computer. What you give your assistant goes only to that assistant, under its own privacy settings. Check those settings before you share anything private.
