How to install Agent Skills in Codex

The folders Codex reads skills from, the built-in installer, and how to add one by hand. Checked against OpenAI's Codex docs on 4 October 2026.

Where skills go

The docs say Codex reads skills from repository, user, admin and system locations:

  • Repository: .agents/skills in the folder where you launch Codex, and in every folder up to the repository root.
  • User: $HOME/.agents/skills, for skills that apply in any repository.
  • Admin: /etc/codex/skills, a shared location on a machine.

If two skills share a name, Codex does not merge them.

Install one skill by hand

git clone https://github.com/proskillpacks/skills
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
cp -r skills/skills/freelancers/late-payment-chaser-uk ~/.agents/skills/

For one project only, copy it into .agents/skills/ in that project.

Or use the npx command

npx skills add proskillpacks/skills -a codex

Or ask Codex to install it

The docs describe a built-in $skill-installer. Their example installs a curated skill with $skill-installer linear, and say you can also prompt the installer to download skills from other repositories. We did not test the exact wording for a GitHub repo, so see the docs for it. The docs also say Codex detects newly installed skills automatically, and that you should restart Codex if one does not appear.

Limits

  • We read the docs and checked the folder paths. We did not run Codex for this page.
  • The docs page covers Codex generally. If your Codex app or version behaves differently, follow the docs.
