The folders Cursor loads skills from, including the shared .agents/skills path, and how to add one. Checked against the Cursor docs on 4 October 2026.

Where skills go

The Cursor docs say skills are loaded automatically from:

  • .agents/skills/ (project)
  • .cursor/skills/ (project)
  • ~/.agents/skills/ (your machine, all projects)
  • ~/.cursor/skills/ (your machine, all projects)

For compatibility, Cursor also loads skills from Claude and Codex folders: .claude/skills/, .codex/skills/, ~/.claude/skills/ and ~/.codex/skills/. Each skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The docs also say a .cursor/skills/ or .agents/skills/ folder anywhere inside a repository is picked up, so a monorepo can keep skills next to the package they apply to.

One catch from the docs: skills in your user folders stay on your machine unless you sync them for Cloud Agents or publish them to your team.

Install one skill by hand

git clone https://github.com/proskillpacks/skills
mkdir -p .agents/skills
cp -r skills/skills/ecommerce/shopify-policy-checker .agents/skills/

Run those from your project folder for a project install. Use ~/.agents/skills/ for all projects.

Or use the npx command

npx skills add proskillpacks/skills -a cursor

The skills tool's README lists cursor as the name for Cursor. Run npx skills add proskillpacks/skills --list to see what is in the repo first.

Limits

  • We read the docs and checked the paths. We did not run Cursor for this page.
  • If a skill does not show up, check the folder holds SKILL.md and reload the window.
