Product Description Rewriter

Clean Shopify HTML descriptions with an SEO title and meta description, for one product or a collection.

Checkout is on Gumroad. Prices are in US dollars; Gumroad shows your local currency and any VAT in the total before you pay. Check that total in the cart. 30-day refund. Works in ChatGPT too: the download includes a paste-in prompt version.

What you give it

A product URL, pasted text, a collection, or your product export CSV.

What you get

Clean Shopify HTML descriptions with an SEO title (≤ 60 characters) and meta description (≤ 155). Bulk runs produce an import CSV.

Before and after

Real store. Taken from the skill's README.

Store: a menswear brand on Shopify (name withheld). Real public product data, used only as an example; we're not affiliated. Product and brand names below are replaced with placeholders.

Before (opening of the live description, followed by a list of spec bullets):

The [Model] Cardigan in Oatmeal Wool from [Brand]

After (skill output, test 01):

  • SEO title (≈49 with the real name): [Model] Cardigan in Oatmeal Wool | [Brand]
  • Meta (≈143 with the real name): Exceptionally soft, mid-weight 100% RWS wool cardigan with a classic V-neck. 5 gauge jersey knit in sizes XS–XXL. Shop the [Model] in Oatmeal.
<p>Exceptionally soft, mid-weight wool in a classic V-neck cardigan that's easy to wear in any setting. The [Model] Cardigan in Oatmeal Wool is knit from 100% RWS wool.</p><ul><li><strong>100% RWS wool</strong>: a soft, mid-weight knit in a natural oatmeal tone.</li><li><strong>Classic V-neck</strong>: a familiar silhouette that works in any setting.</li><li><strong>Ribbed trim</strong>: single layer 2x2 rib at the cuffs, neck and bottom opening.</li><li><strong>Pocket detail</strong>: double layer 1x1 rib finishes the pocket opening.</li></ul><h3>Details</h3><ul><li>100% RWS wool</li><li>5 gauge, jersey construction</li><li>Sizes XS (36) to XXL (46)</li><li>Made in China</li></ul><h3>Care</h3><p>Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry, or dry clean.</p><p>[confirm: fit notes, e.g. true to size or relaxed?]</p><p>Returns: eligible items can be returned within 21 days of receipt. See our <a href="/policies/refund-policy">return policy</a>.</p>

Where each fact came from: "soft, mid-weight, V-neck" from the store's own meta description, the specs from the product's bullets, the sizes from its variants, and the 21 days from its refund policy. Fit isn't stated anywhere, so it's flagged instead of guessed. An earlier draft said "reinforced pockets". The source only says "double layer rib at the pocket opening", so the skill now refuses that kind of upgrade.

What it does

Turns thin or messy Shopify product descriptions into copy you can paste straight in: Shopify-safe HTML (benefit-led intro, scannable bullets, specs, care, a policy link), plus an SEO title (≤ 60 chars) and meta description (≤ 155 chars). Every claim comes from your own product data. Anything missing is flagged for you to fill in, never guessed.

How it differs from Shopify Magic (free, built in): Magic drafts from the details you type into the editor. This skill reads your live product data and your store's existing copy for voice, keeps every fact traceable, flags gaps instead of filling them, writes the SEO fields, and handles a whole collection or an export CSV in one run.

How it was tested

Tested on 4 real public Shopify stores and one product export CSV. Final scores: 9, 9, 10, 10 and 9 out of 10.

Tested on a menswear brand, a home-textiles brand, a coffee roaster, an allergy-friendly snack brand (pasted text), and the menswear brand's catalog converted to Shopify's export format (CSV mode). All are real public Shopify stores. Final scores: 9, 9, 10, 10, 9 out of 10.

The tests ran on real public data, never made-up cases, and were scored against a written rubric. A skill in this range ships only when every test scores 8/10 or more.

How we test, what we do not do, and which assistants we ran it on.

Limits

  • It needs the store's public JSON. Some stores block it; paste the text instead.
  • Shopify's 2024+ export headers (URL handle, Description, SEO title) are supported by name mapping but haven't been tested on a real new-format export yet.
  • It writes from what your listing says. If your listing is one line, the result will be short too, and it says what to add.

Works with

Works with any assistant that reads SKILL.md skills (Claude, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and others), plus a paste-in prompt version for ChatGPT or any chatbot. We run our release tests on Claude Sonnet and Opus. Use your assistant's strongest model: in our tests, a small, fast model added facts that were not in the source data. The helper scripts need Python 3 (standard library only). Reading a live store needs web access; otherwise paste the text.

For people who use AI assistants

  1. Unzip the download. It holds the product-description-rewriter folder, ready-made zips for claude.ai in a claude-ai folder, a README and the licence.
  2. Put the product-description-rewriter folder where your assistant looks for skills. The generic path is .agents/skills/ (or npx skills add from a folder). Tool-specific paths:
    • Claude Code: ~/.claude/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ inside one project)
    • OpenAI Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and others: .agents/skills/ or the skills folder their docs name
    • claude.ai: Customize, Skills, then the plus button, Create skill, Upload a skill, and upload the zip from the claude-ai folder without unzipping it (code execution must be on in Settings, Capabilities)
    • ChatGPT or any chatbot: open the skill's prompt.md, paste it into the chat, then paste your own text or link
    • Steps for each tool, with links to its official docs: how to install Agent Skills
  3. Ask for the job in plain words, for example: "Rewrite the description for https://yourstore.com/products/xyz". The skill loads by itself.

Where to start

What is in the download

Read from the real file.

Get it

  • You get: a zip file (double-click it to open it) with a guide and a text you paste into ChatGPT or any chatbot.
  • Checkout: Gumroad opens on this page. Click Add to cart, enter your email and card details, and check the total, with any VAT, before you pay. Prices here are in US dollars.
  • After you pay: a download page opens right away with the zip file, and Gumroad gives you a receipt there that you can resend. Open it, then paste the text from the prompts folder into ChatGPT and add your details.

One-time payment. Updates to this version are free. Questions or a refund: reply to your receipt within 30 days, or write to kaiventura.founder@gmail.com.
