The short answer
I created beautiful brand incl. AI pictures and logo, colour cheme, brand voice, etc. But I am getting 0 sales.
Would you trust and buy from this dog harness store? Brutally honest feedback wanted
- Most owners asked about design and trust. Almost nobody asked about product data, and that is where the most common gaps were.
- In 15 stores whose owners asked why they had no sales, 14 had no shipping or return details in the hidden product details Google reads and 12 had no barcode number in them.
- The gaps a visitor would see: 9 had no reviews on the sampled page, 9 had a description under 80 words, 4 had a missing, thin or template policy.
- Do the nine checks below in this order. Each takes about two minutes on your own store and costs nothing.
- This is the order of what we saw, not a ranking of what costs sales. We saw public pages only, not traffic.
Counts are from our look at 15 stores whose owners asked for feedback (public pages only, 4 October 2026) and our 100-store study (99 measurable, 3 October 2026). The owners picked themselves and 15 is a small number, so read the counts as direction. They are gaps we saw, not proven causes of lost sales: we could not see anyone's traffic, ads or checkout.
Nine checks, in the order of how many of the 15 stores had the gap
- Shipping and return details Google can read
14 of 15 stores, 93%, had none in the hidden product details Google reads. The 100-store study found 88% with none. For a shopper this means Google cannot show your delivery and return terms next to your product.
How to check: In your Shopify admin go to Settings, then Policies, and write real delivery times and a real return window. If you use Google Merchant Center (Google's free shop listings), enter the same details in its shipping and returns settings. We did not test every theme, so also ask your theme's support whether it passes these details on, or run the free Store Quick Check. - Barcode numbers on your products
12 of 15 stores, 80%, had no barcode number (also called GTIN, the number under the barcode on the packaging) in the hidden product details. This matters to Google and to AI shopping assistants more than to a shopper.
How to check: In your Shopify admin, open Products, pick a product and check the Barcode field on each variant. If you resell branded goods, the number is on the box or from your supplier. - Reviews on the product page
9 of 15 stores, 60%: the review box was empty, or no review app was installed.
How to check: Open a product page on your phone. Is there a real review above the fold? If not, turn on automatic review-request emails after delivery and ask your first buyers personally. - Descriptions of 80 words or more
9 of 15 stores, 60%, had at least one of their first five descriptions under 80 words.
How to check: Paste your first five descriptions into a word counter. Add size or fit, materials, what is in the box, care and who it is for. - Picture descriptions (alt text)
9 of 15 stores, 60%, had product photos with no short description for people who cannot see the picture, which Google also reads. Our judgement: a small fix with a small expected effect.
How to check: In your Shopify admin, open a product, click a photo and choose Edit alt text. Write one plain sentence about what the picture shows. - What shows in a Google search result
7 of 15 stores, 47%: a missing two-line summary (the meta description), one of 320 characters, or a 94 character title.
How to check: Search your store name on Google and read your own result. Keep titles short and the summary under about 155 characters. In your Shopify admin you edit both under Search engine listing, at the bottom of each product, page and your home page settings. - Star rating Google can read, where reviews exist
4 of 15 stores, 27%, had reviews visible or an app installed but no star rating in the hidden product details Google reads, so Google cannot show the stars next to the product.
How to check: In your reviews app's settings, look for an option about Google or search results (it may be called rich snippets or structured data) and switch it on. Then check one product with Google's free Rich Results Test. - Policies that are missing, thin or template text
4 of 15 stores, 27%. One still had "[2-10 business days]" in its shipping text.
How to check: Settings, then Policies: read each page as a shopper. Search for square brackets. See the policy pages page. - One main heading on each product page
2 of 15 stores, 13%, had a product page with no main heading (the large title at the top, called H1).
How to check: The main heading should be the product name, shown once at the top. Most themes do this for you. If yours does not, ask your theme's support.
Questions store owners ask
What is a realistic first fix?
Our judgement, not a measurement: real proof on the product page first, then finished shipping and returns text with a one-line note near Add to cart, then descriptions with facts, then the hidden details for Google, then the search basics.
Why are so many of these checks about hidden details for Google?
Because that is what we could measure from outside. Those hidden details matter most to Google and AI shopping assistants. A visitor sees reviews, descriptions, policies and delivery terms, which are the checks about what a shopper reads.
Is 15 stores enough to trust this?
No. They are owners who asked for feedback, a small group that picked itself, so the shares are direction, not rates. On the hidden-details point the 100-store study agrees: 88% had no shipping or return details there.
Does this cover ads and traffic quality?
No. We cannot see traffic, ads, checkout or speed from public pages. If you have visitors and no add to carts, see the traffic page.
Where can I get a free look at my store?
Send us the address and what you are seeing. We read the public pages and send back one page of findings, free, with no call and no sign-up.
