How long until I hear back after I submit chargeback evidence?

Shopify's help says the credit card company's review can take up to 75 days after you submit (65 to 75 for an inquiry, possibly longer), and the decision is final. Where to see the status.

The short answer

  1. Shopify's help says the credit card company's review "can take up to 75 days after you submit".
  2. For an inquiry it says the review "usually takes 65-75 days, but might take longer".
  3. The decision is final: Shopify says there is no appeal process and it can't overturn the bank's decision.
Despite full evidence and proof that these customers do not have a canceled subscription and received the product, we are losing.

What the sources say

  • Shopify's responding article, the chargeback process: "Gather and submit evidence: You have limited time, usually 7-21 days, to build your response. Credit card company reviews: This can take up to 75 days after you submit." source
  • Decision: "You win: Disputed amount and chargeback fee are returned. Partial win: Some of the disputed amount returned. Customer wins: You keep nothing." source
  • Inquiries: "The credit card company reviews the inquiry: This usually takes 65-75 days, but might take longer." source
  • "Final decisions: After the bank or credit card company rules on a chargeback, there's no appeal process and the decision is final. Shopify doesn't make these decisions and can't overturn them." source
  • Statuses in the admin: "submitted: The credit card company is reviewing the evidence and making a decision about the chargeback or inquiry." The others are open, won, lost and resolved. source
  • Money meanwhile: for a chargeback the disputed amount and fee "are withdrawn immediately". For an inquiry, "No money is taken during the investigation." source
  • Other processors differ. Stripe's documentation says the customer's bank (the issuer) usually has 60 to 75 days after you submit and the whole dispute can take 2 to 3 months. PayPal's UK help says it usually decides a claim within 14 days, some take 30 days or longer. source

Plain words: The issuer is the bank that issued the customer's card.

It depends on your card network or bank

The time depends on the card network and the cardholder's bank, which is why Shopify says up to 75 days. Where you see it: the status on the order in your Shopify admin changes from open to submitted to won or lost. Shopify says chargeback notifications go to your store contact email, which you can check under Settings > Store details.

What to do in the next 10 minutes

  1. Open the order and confirm the status says submitted, not open. If it says open, your evidence has not been sent yet.
  2. Save a copy of exactly what you submitted, with the date.
  3. Check Settings > Store details for the email Shopify uses for chargeback notices, so you see the decision.
  4. Plan for the cash: Shopify says the disputed amount and fee are taken when the chargeback is filed, not at the decision.

More questions merchants ask

Can I speed it up?

Shopify's pages give no way to. They say the credit card company reviews it.

Can I appeal a loss?

Shopify says there is no appeal process and the decision is final.

Will I see why I lost?

Shopify says a response from the customer's bank (the issuer) is available only for chargebacks that escalate from inquiries and result in a lost status, and only when available.

Is it the same for PayPal and Stripe?

No. Stripe says usually 60 to 75 days for the customer's bank. PayPal decides claims itself, usually in 10 to 14 days according to its US and UK help, sometimes longer.
